Distraction Box Program

The issue of pain and fear in children is something that is emotionally traumatic for kids, and draws out treatment time. Launched in 2004, The TLC Distraction Box Program is designed to give nurses and healthcare professionals the perfect tools to guide young children (developmentally 8 years and under) through a medical examination or procedure. The box contains items that engage the attention of the child, and also comply with hospital infection control protocols.

The facts on Distraction Boxes

Average usage in hospitals: 13 times per week
This means 1 box helps over 670 kids per year

Feedback from Healthcare Professionals:
98% say it lowers stress levels in patients
97% say it is a critical part of care

Survey conducted in 2010 in over 300 Australian hospitals using TLC Distraction Boxes.

Distraction diverts attention away from the procedure by focusing the child's attention on an object or activity. This relaxes the child, aids cooperation and lessens their awareness of pain. A more relaxed, co-operative child results in reduced anxiety for the child, parent, and professional, and overall a smoother procedure.

TLC for kids is the only children’s charity in Australia providing this type of relief, we provide TLC Distraction Boxes free of charge to public hospitals across Australia.

Annually, over 500,000 children benefit from this program, in hospitals from metropolitan areas, right through to the most remote medical facilities you could find. Even the Royal Flying Doctors Service use the boxes! Now we need your help to double the number of boxes and provide every public hospital with this vital service.
