TLC Distraction Box Ambassador

We are pleased and honored to announce Mr. Neil Mitchell AO has accepted the role as the TLC Distraction Box Ambassador.

Neil has played a significant role in helping to secure and establish financial support for TLC for kids over the past years via his radio program on 3AW.  Not only did Neil help to secure funds to launch the TLC Distraction Box Program in Victoria, which as a direct follow on, assisted with the expansion of the program across Australia, he has continued to promote and support all of the services TLC for kids provides.

TLC for kids introduced the Distraction Box Program to Australia in 2004 for young children (developmentally 8 years and under) experiencing a medical examination or procedure in Emergency Departments. The box contains various items chosen for their ability to distract and their suitability to conform to hospital Infection Control protocols. Since the programs inception its success has resulted in the use of these Distraction Boxes, facilitating distraction, in a wide variety of hospital departments and Community Health Clinics.

Ideally any examination or procedure in a hospital setting should create as little trauma for a child as possible. This is where simple Distraction Techniques can be implemented: Distraction diverts attention away from the procedure through focusing the child's attention on some object or activity. This relaxes the child, encourages co-operation and by increasing their concentration on the distraction item will lessen their concentration on any pain. A more relaxed and co-operative child will reduce the time taken for a procedure giving an end result of reduced anxiety for both child and parent, and less stress for the Health Care Professionals involved. A recent Survey showed less medication was required in many instances when Distraction items and techniques were used.
