Tim's thoughts on Australia Day

Tim’s Reflections on Australia Day

It’s been 3 years since our CEO and Founder Tim Conolan won Australia Day’s Australian of the Year Local Hero for his work with TLC for Kids. Since then, we have helped sick kids and their families on two million more occasions – bringing it up to over 6 million smiles since 1998!

We sat down with Tim to get his thoughts on Australia Day 2017.

Interview with Tim Conolan – January 2017

What does Australia Day mean to you? In light of the recent tragedy in Melbourne CBD, many people may think it is inappropriate to use the ‘celebrate’ for Australia Day. However, out of the pointless and selfish act of violence that affected so many, it was beyond inspiring to see the way people come together, step up and help those in need. And what makes me proud to be living here is the fact that everyone who offered help did not stop, for one second, to ask what their nationality was or who they were, or even what religion they believe in. They simply helped their fellow human, and that should be what we celebrate. To me, Australia Day is a time to reflect on our past and celebrate living in one of the best countries in the world. Everyday, I am grateful for the life I have and the incredible opportunities living in Australia has provided. Australia Day is a great time to stop, meet people, be proud and spend a little time appreciating the fact that anybody can achieve anything in this country if they put the effort into it. What will you be doing on Australia Day? I am honoured to be representing the country as an Australia Day Ambassador. On Australia Day, I will be attending and presenting at an Australian Citizenship ceremony in Moonee Ponds. I am really looking forward to hearing and sharing stories about the things that make this country so great. It’s quite heartwarming to see so many people make a life-changing decision to become Australian citizens. What advice would you give to new citizens? I always believe it’s important to be an active member of the community. Giving back in some way not only helps create a better society, it enriches your life and improves the level of happiness for everyone. What does it mean to you to be an Australian of the Year? This has, and continues to be something I am extremely proud of. Being able to represent all the children and families we have helped, and those we will help, always puts a smile on my face. Being part of such an inspirational and aspirational award continues to be terrific platform to highlight community groups that are helping to shape this great nation. What’s the one thing you’d like to see for Australia in 2017? A continuation of people working together and making a difference to those in need. I’d like to see a lot more cooperation between businesses, charities, organisations and groups with a focus on fixing problems and providing greater opportunities for future generations. This is truly the year of giving and that’s exactly what I’d like to see. More giving!
